Every Mercer case starts with a crime, but underneath it I’m usually trying to explore something about Frank himself.
With The Murder of the Silent Man, I wanted to look at what happens when guilt is shared rather than cleanly owned by one person. The mystery isn’t simply about finding a killer. It’s about a family where everyone has played some part in the damage, whether through greed, resentment, silence or betrayal.
For Frank, that creates a much harder problem than pointing at one person and calling the case solved.
Sometimes there isn’t one monster in the room.
Sometimes everyone helped build it.
